Josephine
Falls - View the breathtaking Josephine Falls as they cascade 25 meters down a steep
canyon carved by the Fording River. This picturesque waterfall was discovered in 1905 by
Professor Henry F. Osborn and his family, and named in honor of Miss Josephine Osborn, a
sweet maid in her teens, who caught the largest trout thus far recorded from that spot.
Josephine Falls
is the destination of Elkford's most popular trail, a moderate hike -
follow the "Forests, Falls and Lakes" trail to Josephine Falls
then continue to one of the two
alpine lakes on the circuit - Lost Lake and Lily Lake - before returning. This is just one of the many
maintained recreation trails in the area. Trails are used through all
seasons.
Lost Lake & Lily Lake - After the trail from Josephine Falls, you can follow the well-defined trail under a canopy of lodgepole pine to the lakes. Lily Lake - A wide variety of wildflowers, mosses, lichen, and fungi border the trail leading to the small lake. The lake supports ducks, wetland birds, and vegetation. Lost Lake - This lake is stocked by the local Rod & Gun Club with Rainbow trout and has a canoe dock and fishing dock. Lost Lake is home to a variety of wildlife including osprey, great blue heron, duck, and others.
