If you like
fishing, Elkford is definitely a favorite of many! Not only do the Elk and Fording Rivers
and all their tributaries contain excellent fishing, but there are an abundance of alpine
lakes in the area that offer some great fishing as well as beautiful scenery. Some of
these lakes are fairly close to a road whereas some will require a couple hour hike into
some of the most spectacular Rocky Mountain country there is. The fish found in these
lakes are Cutthroat, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, and Dolly Varden.

The mountains, with many nearby lakes, woodlands, and cold rivers
provide homes for elk, bighorn mountain sheep, mountain goats, black and grizzly bears,
wolf, moose, and both white-tailed and mule deer. Also sharing the forest are many smaller
animals including coyote, cougar, lynx, wolverine, skunk, porcupine, snowshoe hare, badgers, and a variety of game birds. Hunters should note that big game season in most parks are under Limited Entry Hunting Restrictions. Consult the current Limited Entry Hunting Synopsis for map details.
